A flambuoyant shotstopper and fans` favourite, Andy Rhodes was the Dunfermline goalkeeper between 1990 and 1992 in the Scottish Premier League, which included an appearance in the 1991 Scottish League Cup Final. Andy joined from Oldham Athletic and moved to St Johnstone in 1992.

Andy was born in Doncaster on 23rd August 1964 and began his football career with Barnsley, signing senior with them in 1983.

Andy left school at 15 to sign at Barnsley as an apprentice. Having been at a rugby only school, his only chance to show his abilities were on a Sunday. That however, was enough for the then manager Allan Clarke and he signed Andy for two years.

Andy`s progress to the first was sudden, Barnsley`s regular keeper was injured and when an on loan keeper was ruled out, Andy was brought in to face Walsall away from home. Although Barnsley lost 1-0, Andy impressed enough to retain his place for the return leg of the League Cup tie. When he again played well the on-loan keeper was sent packing and Andy took over between the sticks for the rest of the season keeping our regular keeper Gary Pearce.

After around 50 appearances, he moved to his home town club, Doncaster Rovers in 1985, where he spent three years, appearing on over 100 occasions. Doncaster Rovers paid Barnsley £25,000 in November 1985. After Hibs took Andy Goram from Oldham Athletic, the Lancashire club signed Andy Rhodes in March 1987 as his replacement.

At Oldham Athletic as first choice keeper, he appeared in the League Cup Final in 1990. Andy was highly acclaimed for his performance in the Oldham side defeated 1-0 by Nottingham Forest at Wembley in the 1990 Littlewoods Cup Final.

On 11th July 1990, Iain Munro brought him to Dunfermline, where he took over the No. 1 jersey from Ian Westwater and quickly became a fans favourite. Andy signed for Dunfermline with a fee of £80,000 being paid to Oldham Athletic going on to play 79 league games and several important cup appearances that culminated in the 1991 Skol Cup final.

During his time at East End Park he won a national competition for Goalkeeper of the Year and was watched by England on three occasions. In pre-season 1992, with The Pars fortunes on a downward spiral, Andy moved to St Johnstone for £80,000 plus Lindsay Hamilton and Roddy Grant. He had made 89 appearances for Athletic.

Andy spent three years at McDiarmid Park before signing for Airdrie in 1995. His three year stint with The Diamonds was not particularly successful and included a loan spell with Scarborough. He retired in 1998 and went on to become a goalkeeping coach, serving at Oldham for two years, Ipswich Town for four years, Preston North End for two and Sheffield Wednesday for eight years.

He is the father of Scotland international striker Jordan Rhodes.
