Darren was born, in Cambuslang, on 13th October 1978. He began his career with a variety of local youth sides, before winning a youth contract with Aberdeen in 1993.

Darren had signed senior for Aberdeen on last day of February 1996 and made his senior debut at the age of 17 - 25th August 1996 - Aberdeen v Hearts. Under 21 caps rewarded his first team performances but a knee injury the following season sidelined him.

He made around 150 first team appearances and he captained the Dons in season 2001-2002 when they finished 4th in the SPL before in July 2003 joining Dunfermline from Aberdeen, along with his brother Derek. He played as a midfielder for five seasons at East End Park, which included two Scottish Cup Finals.

Season 2006-07 saw Darren for the first time, not having brother Derek at the same club. Injury restricted his appearances in the latter half of season 2006-07. Up and until then Daren was a regular choice in midfield, Darren made 150 appearances for The Pars, scoring 11 goals.

In the summer of 2008, he moved to Dundee but, although being at Dens Park for nearly two years, he never established a first team slot and moved on to Morton in 2010. A year later, he was on the move again, this time to Alloa Athletic.

In 2014, Darren moved to Albion Rovers as player/manager. Three years later, his managerial credentials established, he moved to East Fife. In 2019, he hung up his boots to concentrate on the manager`s role, remaining in Methil until 2021, when he took over at Stirling Albion.

In 2024, Darren moved to become manager of Clyde.
