Jim was born on 6th November 1951, in Falkirk. He spent his young career with Gairdoch United. He progressed to East Stirlingshire in 1969 and for six years appeared regularly in their first team, making around 200 appearances.
At the end of November 1975 he was recruited by Dunfermline Athletic and went straight into the first team. When Alex Kinninmonth was out through injury, Jim took over as skipper and retained the arm band when Alex left at the end of the season. By season 1978/79 he was appearing less often and John Salton took over the captaincy. Jim moved to Falkirk in 1978, having appeared for The Pars on 98 occasions, scoring 4 goals.
In 1980, Meakin moved to Stenhousemuir where he appeared regularly before a brief move to East Fife in 1982, quickly followed, in the same year, by a return to East Stirling. Three years at Firs Park took him to 1985, when he went back to Stenhousemuir, finishing his career there in 1987.
