His all action style and robust defending endeared him to Pars fans but it did lead to games missed through injury or suspension. As Jim Meakin`s appearances reduced John Salton took over the captaincy, in 1978. His performances in 1978/79 earned John a nomination in the Second Division Players` Player of the Year. As well as aerial prowess, John was a strong tackler and extremely mobile for a centre defender.
In 1981 Pat Stanton took over as manager and John was seen by the new management as "injury prone". Stanton preferred Willie Leishman at centre half and Jim Brown as captain. John played his last game for The Pars in December 1981, having made 160 appearances and scored 10 goals. He was released to Berwick Rangers before playing out his career with Meadowbank Thistle.
